Course title: Understanding Autism

Intended audience: The course has been designed to help professionals working with children and young people within the autistic spectrum. This includes teachers and teaching assistants, nursing staff, social care workers and others involved in promoting the health, well-being and education of children and young people. The course will also be of value to parents and foster carers.

Summary

The course provides an introduction to, and overview of, autism and emphasises the importance of understanding autism if we are to ensure that children and young people within the autism spectrum are properly supported and fairly treated. The course is based around video materials that include a short drama, an interview with parents of an autistic child and an overview of the key features of autism.

Learning objectives: On successful completion of the course participants will be able to: 

• Understand the nature of autism and its implications for children and young people within the autism spectrum
• Develop a fuller understanding of the needs of children and young people with autism
• Feel more confident in interacting with children and young people within the autism spectrum
